The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) announced 474 vacancies for the Engineering Services Examination (ESE) 2026, also known as the Indian Engineering Services (IES) exam. Vacancies are across four engineering disciplines in Group A and Group B Central Engineering Services.

Reservations for SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwBD are as per central government rules. Officers recruited are posted to premier engineering organisations such as CPWD, CWC, BRO, MES, Railway Electrical/Signal, and DRDL.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

Candidates must hold a B.E. / B.Tech degree in the relevant engineering discipline from a recognised university or institution. Additionally:

  • Electronics & Telecommunication: M.Sc. in Electronics, Physics (with Electronics), or Wireless Communication is also accepted for certain posts.
  • Electrical Engineering: M.Sc. (Physics) with specialisation in Electronics is accepted for some Electrical posts.

Candidates in the final year of their engineering degree are eligible to apply provisionally but must produce the degree certificate at the time of the Personality Test.

Age Limit 21 – 30 years
Age Relaxation General/EWS: 21–30 years (as on January 1, 2026). OBC: up to 33 years (+3 years). SC/ST: up to 35 years (+5 years). PwBD: up to 40 years (+10 years). Defence-service disabled candidates: 3-8 years additional relaxation per rules.

🏆 Selection Process

  1. Stage I — Preliminary Exam (Screening Only, February 8, 2026): Two papers — General Studies & Engineering Aptitude (200 marks) and Discipline-specific Technical Paper (300 marks). Marks NOT counted in final merit; used only for shortlisting.
  2. Stage II — Mains Exam (June 21, 2026): Two descriptive/conventional engineering papers of 300 marks each (total 600 marks). Marks count toward final merit.
  3. Stage III — Personality Test / Interview: 200 marks. Conducted at UPSC Bhavan, New Delhi. Assesses technical knowledge, problem-solving ability, and communication skills.
  4. Final Merit: Mains (600) + Personality Test (200) = 800 marks. Candidates are allotted posts/services based on merit and preference.

  3. Enter personal details, upload photograph and signature, and note your registration ID.

  5. Pay Rs. 200 application fee via Net Banking, Debit/Credit Card, or UPI. SC/ST/Female/PwBD candidates are exempted.
  6. Submit the form and download the confirmation page for your records.
  7. Application for ESE 2026 closed on October 16, 2025. Monitor upsc.gov.in for ESE 2027 notification (expected September 2026).
