The Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) conducts the Gazetted Probationers Examination for Group A and Group B posts in the Karnataka state government, commonly known as the Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) exam. The current 2024-notification cycle has 384 vacancies and is at the interview stage (May–June 2026). A fresh 2026 notification is expected to be released later in 2026.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

Candidates must hold a Bachelor's Degree in any discipline from a recognised university. Final-year students may apply provisionally.

Kannada language requirement: All candidates must have a working knowledge of Kannada. Candidates who do not have Kannada as a school subject must qualify a Kannada Language Proficiency Test before the final selection.

Number of attempts: General — 5 attempts; OBC (Category II-A, II-B, III-A, III-B) — 7 attempts; SC/ST — unlimited attempts.

Age Limit 21 – 35 years
Age Relaxation General: 21–35 years (as on January 1 of exam year). OBC (Category IIA, IIB, IIIA, IIIB): up to 38 years (+3). SC/ST: up to 40 years (+5). Additional 3-year relaxation across all categories extended through December 2027 per Karnataka Government order. PwD/Ex-Servicemen: as per state norms.

🏆 Selection Process

  1. Preliminary Examination (Objective, Merit-based for shortlisting): Two papers — Paper I (General Studies, 100 marks) and Paper II (CSAT, 100 marks — qualifying). Single day, both papers. Paper I marks count for shortlisting; Paper II is qualifying only (minimum marks required).
  2. Main Examination (Descriptive, Merit-based): Multiple papers covering Kannada (qualifying), English (qualifying), General Studies I–IV (merit), and Optional Subject I & II (merit). Detailed Mains paper count and marks per paper per the official notification.
  3. Personality Test / Interview: 200 marks. Conducted by a KPSC board. Assesses administrative aptitude, communication, and personality.
  4. Final Merit: Based on Mains (GS + Optional papers) + Interview (200) combined. Language papers (Kannada, English) are qualifying only.
